It’s that spooky time of year again, and you know what that means—pumpkins! But what do you do with your pumpkin once Halloween is over? Your pumpkin can transform into something incredible that benefits you, animals, and the planet. Don’t let it go to waste!

To help you get started, here are five ideas to make the most out of your pumpkin this season.

1. Compost or Donate to a Community Garden

Compost Your Pumpkin

One of the best ways to dispose of your pumpkin is through composting. It’s a sustainable method that can enrich your garden soil. Pumpkins are nutrient-rich and make an excellent addition to your compost pile. To compost your pumpkin, remove any nonorganic materials and decorations, cut the pumpkin into smaller pieces, and add it to your compost bin. If you don’t compost, you can contact your local community garden so they can use your pumpkin to compost and grow more food. Composting can reduce food waste and create a nourishing soil amendment for your garden.

2. Farm Animal and Wildlife Feed

Wildlife Feed

Instead of throwing away your pumpkin, consider repurposing it as a tasty treat for nearby wildlife. You can cut the pumpkin into small chunks, leave it whole (if it’s not carved), or cut it in half and place it in your yard or a nearby forested area for wildlife to snack on. You can add bird seed or dry your pumpkin seeds to add as food. This way squirrels, birds, and other small animals will appreciate the nourishment and treat.

Another option is to donate your pumpkin to your local farmed animal rescue. But make sure to avoid using pumpkins with candles or artificial additives, as these can be harmful to animals. Repurposing your pumpkin can help minimize waste and provide a nutritious animal treat.

3. Pumpkin Purée, Seeds, and Recipes

Pumpkin Seeds and Recipes

Transform your Halloween pumpkin into a delicious and healthy ingredient by making pumpkin purée or roasting your pumpkin seeds. First, cut the pumpkin into manageable pieces, remove the skin, and bake until it becomes soft. Once cooled, blend the pumpkin until it becomes smooth. You can incorporate this purée into pumpkin pies, bread, muffins, soups, ice cream, or even pumpkin-flavored pancakes. For roasting, clean your seeds and add your desired seasoning. Be creative in the kitchen, and enjoy the seasonal flavors while minimizing food waste. It’s crucial to avoid using pumpkins with candles or artificial additives, as these can be harmful.

4. DIY Pumpkin Beauty Products

Looking for a natural way to enhance the health of your skin? Pumpkins are a great source of vitamins and antioxidants that can work wonders in your beauty regimen. Why not try your hand at making some homemade beauty products with pumpkin purée? One idea is to create a nourishing face mask by combining pumpkin purée with oats and turmeric. Your skin will thank you for the extra TLC!

5. Seed Collecting

Planting Pumpkin Seeds

Growing your pumpkin can be a rewarding experience, and you can continue to enjoy it for years by saving the seeds for future planting. After harvesting the pumpkin, take some time to rinse and dry the seeds thoroughly to remove any pumpkin flesh. Then store them in a cool, dry place and wait for spring, when you can sow them again and grow your pumpkins. This sustainable practice reduces the need to buy new seeds each year and allows you to appreciate the natural cycle of life.

After the Halloween celebrations, we can still make the most of our pumpkins by embracing these eco-friendly ideas. This versatile fruit can be used in many ways to help the environment and animals. Let’s celebrate Halloween responsibly and continue enjoying our pumpkins’ benefits long after the holiday.
