On October 29, Mercy For Animals staff and volunteers made their way to the headquarters of Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), carrying more than 37,000 petition signatures. As a key player and promoter of the U.S. dairy industry, DMI pushes a fiction that glosses over the realities of dairy production.
Our goal? To demand transparency and put an end to misleading tactics and advertising that mask the routine cruelty behind dairy products.
Unveiling the Truth About Dairy Management Inc.
A recent Mercy For Animals investigation at a New York dairy farm uncovered the heart-wrenching truth behind DMI’s feel-good marketing campaigns. The disturbing footage shows animals suffering from painful, untreated conditions and mother cows grieving and calling out for their babies as their calves are taken away so that their milk can be sold for profit.
The Petition Delivery
The signatures, collected from compassionate animal advocates, call on DMI to publicly acknowledge the standard practices of the dairy industry—including mother-calf separation, routine mutilations such as dehorning, and the slaughter of “spent” cows. They urge DMI to stop promoting these cruelties as “wholesome” in a system where animals are “well cared for” while nothing could be further from the truth.
While Mercy For Animals staff members attempted to hand-deliver the petition signatures to DMI executives, we made sure our voices were heard, sending them by email—while compassionate animal advocates and volunteers held signs outside of DMI’s headquarters to raise awareness about the cruelty involved in dairy production. They also handed out leaflets to interested passersby.
In the words of Dr. Walter Sánchez-Suárez, a veterinarian and Mercy For Animals’ animal welfare scientist, “This petition delivery is a demand for honesty and an end to cruelty as business as usual.”
