MEP Tilly Metz (Greens/EfA) reminded Commissioner Várhelyi that 1.5 million citizens have also asked for a ban on fur farms and fur products, through the Fur Free Europe ECI, which the EC is expected to respond to by 2026. “It is time for a human, democratic respectful Europe,” she added.
MEP Sebestian Everding (The Left) highlighted that the provisions for farming are severely outdated, with fast-growing broiler chickens suffering immensely under the current legal standards.
MEP Niels Fuglsang (S&D), urged Várhelyi to provide a fixed timeline of when all the legislative proposals are published – including rules for keeping animals, slaughter and labelling, while he promised close cooperation to ensure an easy transition for all stakeholders.
MEP Thomaz Waitz (Greens) stressed that animal welfare is a topic close to EU citizens hearts’ and that animals facing slaughter should suffer as little as humanely possible and are treated decently.
MEP E. Forreau (The Left) urged the European Commission to get rid of cages, to respect animals and the wishes of citizens, while she reminded of the close link between poor animal welfare standards and antimicrobial resistance.
