For many animals in zoos, “home” is nothing more than a cage – a life sentence they never deserved. Few stories show this more clearly than that of Kate the elephant.
Torn from the wild in 1969 and transported to the UK, Kate has spent more than five decades confined behind bars. Day after day, she paces the same enclosure, watched by crowds yet unable to roam freely, make choices, or experience the life she was meant to have. After half a century, her captivity has brought no meaningful conservation benefit – only a lifetime of deprivation.
Sadly, Kate is not alone.
Zoos often claim high welfare and conservation standards, but the reality is far different. Our research and investigations are shifting public views by exposing legal failings, challenging publicly funded zoos, and promoting ethical alternatives.
What Our Research Shows
Across more than 250 zoos in Great Britain, our findings reveal:
Despite industry claims, zoos provide no real conservation value. The public deserves to know the truth — and together, we can encourage compassionate, ethical alternatives.
The zoo industry is built on captivity and cruelty, not compassion. With powerful new research and support from local communities, we can expose the reality animals suffer behind cages and glass — and push for a future where they are no longer exploited for entertainment. Laura Walton – Co-Director
