As part of their new campaign, LAV is calling on the Italian government to ensure the protection of companion animals by implementing:
- Alignment of VAT on pet food and veterinary services (currently at 22%) with the rate applied to healthcare goods and services for people (0-5%);
- Support for social veterinary services, available to vulnerable people.
The benefits of implementing these measures could extend beyond pet owners, as lowering costs for food and veterinary services will aid animal shelters and potentially result in a higher number of dogs and cats being adopted.
LAV highlights that companion animals contribute to emotional and physical wellbeing, enrich our social lives and are increasingly recognised as members of the family.
