Huge win for animals! Following multiple PETA investigations—each of which has revealed deprivation, immense animal suffering, and death—PetSmart has ended its sales of several live animal species, including turtles, tortoises, Cuban false chameleons, Bahamian anoles, and red claw crabs.

Why PetSmart Ending Its Sale of Turtles, Tortoises, and Other Animals Matters

For years, PetSmart has bought small animals from breeding and middleman operations that confine them to filthy, crowded conditions and deprive them of even the most basic care, so PETA welcomes the company’s decision to stop selling turtles and tortoises, species with highly specialized needs.

PETA’s investigations of PetSmart suppliers have exposed systemic cruelty and neglect—including thousands of bearded dragons warehoused in filthy, barren plastic tubs and workers slamming a bag containing live hamsters against a table in an attempt to kill them.

How You Can Help Animals Still Sold at PetSmart

While no longer selling turtles, tortoises, and other reptiles is a step in the right direction, please let the multibillion-dollar company know that you will not set foot in any of its stores until all live animals are no longer part of its inventory. Spread the word by sharing this post with your friends and family members and asking them to speak up today. The animals suffering at PetSmart depend on you!

If you’re ready to bring an animal into your life, visit a local shelter or other adoption facility and commit to providing a lifetime of care.
