Scotland’s last captive-held elephant, Mondula (also known as Mondy), has sadly died. Her passing is a sad reminder of how many animals are born and die in zoos, never knowing true freedom like their wild cousins. But this tragedy also presents a rare chance to ensure no elephant is ever held in captivity in Scotland again. You can read the news here.
Elephants are intelligent, social, and autonomous beings. In the wild, they travel vast distances, form lifelong bonds, and make their own choices. Captivity strips them of all of this freedom. No enclosure, however large or “enriched” the zoo industry claims them to be, can replicate the freedom they so deserve.
The Scottish Government now has a moral opportunity to commit to a permanent ban on elephants in zoos or safari parks, and ensure Scotland remains truly elephant-free. You can read more here!
