Dog Owners Urged to Start Preparing Early With Fireworks Season Ahead
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook

With fireworks season approaching, dog owners in the UK are encouraged to prepare their pets early. Animal welfare experts note that sudden loud noises and bright lights can cause severe anxiety in dogs, resulting in panic, escape attempts, or injury.

The RSPCA reports that fireworks noise is a leading cause of stress in dogs. Common signs include trembling, hiding, whining, excessive barking, and destructive behavior. If not managed, these reactions can negatively impact a dog’s long-term health.

Experts recommend creating a safe space at home, such as a quiet room with familiar bedding, toys, and background noise like a TV or calming music to help mask outside sounds. Adjusting walking routines to earlier in the day can also reduce the risk of dogs being startled outdoors during fireworks.

For dogs with severe phobias, veterinarians suggest desensitization techniques or calming aids such as pheromone diffusers, anxiety wraps, or prescribed medication when necessary. These measures should be introduced gradually, as waiting until fireworks begin can make adaptation more difficult.

Animal charities are raising public awareness about pet welfare during holiday celebrations. Owners are advised to close windows, draw curtains, and stay with their dogs during peak fireworks times to provide reassurance.

The key message is to prepare early to protect pets. Taking proactive steps helps ensure the festive season is less stressful for dogs and enjoyable for all.
