Stray Dog Killed by Tea-Stall Owner on Bazaar Road in Chennai
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook

A recent incident in Mylapore, Chennai, has caused concern for animal welfare groups. A 56-year-old tea-stall owner reportedly beat a stray dog to death after the dog approached an elderly customer. The event was recorded on video and shared on social media, which started a public discussion about how stray dogs are managed in cities.

What Happened

The police reported that the incident happened on Bazaar Road in Mylapore. The tea shop owner, E. Mohan, was serving a senior citizen when a stray dog came near and tried to bite the elderly man. Mohan chased the dog away, but when the dog returned, he picked up a wooden plank and hit the animal several times until it died.

After the incident, Mohan did not inform the authorities or seek help. He placed the dog’s body in a nearby garbage bin.

Video Evidence and Public Outcry

A local person recorded the incident on a cellphone. The video was shared on WhatsApp and other social media platforms. This led to responses from animal rights activists, residents, and other concerned citizens. The event started a public discussion.

Legal Action and Aftermath

After the video was widely shared, animal welfare volunteers went to the location. They collected the dog’s body and sent it to Vepery Veterinary Hospital for a post-mortem examination. At the same time, a local activist named Keerthana filed a formal complaint with the Mylapore Police Station.

Police responded to the complaint by arresting Mohan. He has been booked under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This section relates to causing grievous hurt. His legal journey is just beginning. Investigations are ongoing. Authorities are examining the exact circumstances surrounding the act.

Why This Incident Matters

This incident shows the ongoing challenges cities face in managing stray animals.

  1. Stray Dog Management
Chennai, like many cities, has seen an increase in the number of stray dogs. This raises concerns about public safety, especially for the elderly and children. It is important to address these issues, as difficult situations can lead to actions that need careful thought.
  1. Animal Protection Laws
Charging Mohan under BNS 325 is important because it shows that harming animals can lead to serious legal consequences. Public attention and activism are often needed to bring such cases to light. Without video evidence or witnesses, many cases may go unnoticed.
  1. Role of Activists and Citizens
In this case, community involvement, such as bystander recordings and the activist’s complaint, led to the owner’s arrest and brought attention to the problem of managing stray animals.
  1. Need for Humane Solutions
The government in Tamil Nadu has been increasing its sterilization and rabies vaccination programs for stray dogs. These steps are important for managing stray populations in a humane and sustainable way. As concerns about safety and animal welfare grow, these programs need to be expanded. Community support is also important.

Reflections from the Ground

Animal welfare groups and community members have raised concerns about this issue. Many stray animals live in difficult conditions. This incident shows the need for education and working together to manage stray animals effectively.

People in the city are asking for stricter enforcement of animal cruelty laws. They also want more patrols in areas with many stray animals. Public awareness campaigns about non-violent solutions are being suggested.

What Needs to Happen Next

  • It is important for authorities to follow up on the case and make sure those responsible are held accountable.
  • Supporting animal welfare groups is important. NGOs and volunteers are often the first to respond. You can help them by providing funding, manpower, or legal assistance.
  • Community involvement is needed. Local residents, shopkeepers, and civic groups should take part in discussions about stray dogs. Workshops, training on safe dog handling, and awareness campaigns can help people understand and care for stray animals.
  • Sustainable management of stray animals is important. More sterilization, vaccination, and shelter programs are needed. Municipal bodies should support these efforts, and laws must make sure animals are treated humanely.

This incident shows why community involvement is important in managing stray animals. Accountability is necessary, but long-term solutions depend on good legal processes, compassion, and practical ways to live alongside stray animals.
