Formerly the shar pei were used by peasants to take care of the flock, as hunting dogs, and even performed the task of guard dog.

However, the shar pei has undergone a great evolution over time and is currently considered an ideal companion dog due to its beauty and unconditional fidelity; in addition to having a calm and balanced character,

As its name suggests, shar pei means ‘sand skin’, referring to its short, scratchy fur; which is rough to the touch. Their color can vary between gray, white and brown, and even some dogs can have a bluish hue. This is a very striking feature since their tongue is also usually dark blue.
